Hi friends,
Winging this newsletter midweek as I’m feeling energized coming back from our family trip to the desert. Don’t get me wrong, it’s of course exhausting traveling with two little ones (is this day 15 or day 20 of spring break and no school? was I delusional to book one room for all 4 of us?). But it was also nice to hang by the pool, take in the warmer weather and views, order the occasional margarita, and get a few minutes of reading in here and there. Currently on the Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow band wagon frenzy — but, to be fair, being married to an MIT engineer who makes video games for a living I’ve been told it will be somewhat relevant? We’ll see.
I packed very (very) light for this trip. As in, I brought this one pair of trousers with me that carried me through all of our non-pool activities. But I guess that speaks to how much I love these pants. They fit very true to size and I took a 0 although I probably could have also taken a 2 for a slightly more relaxed fit. On repeat (quite literally) for spring and did not need to hem (I’m 5’5”).
Vest is from Scout Goods, a small LA based brand utilizing deadstock fabric for their production. I think the vest runs half a size small and I would size up, especially if you have any chest. I noticed they are currently running a 20% off promo this week on their vests with code BESTVEST.
For a fun dinner taking the kids to their first hibachi experience, I wore this cotton knit sweater with the same pants. I just ordered the other colorway too.
I have a soft spot for this fun sparkly bag from Amazon. I bought it last summer when I was on a time crunch for an event, was looking for a little shimmer to jazz up an outfit, but didn’t want to drop $$$. The metallic sparkle trend is here to stay for a bit and I’ve ended up breaking this out more frequently than I thought I would even after I first purchased. I wear it with more simple, clean outfits (jeans, tee, loafers). For an Amazon purchase, it gets an A+ from me. I can personally attest to the fact that it holds diapers and kid toys well.
Some poolside things.
20 year old me would probably laugh at how much 37 year old me tries to hide from the sun, but here we are. In addition to the only SPF I actually love and use daily (moisturizing and not greasy), this wide brim canvas hat is it (almost sold out). This Doen hat is very similar (and cheaper) and just came back in stock. Wearing my hat with these Attico sunglasses.
I come back to this Deiji Studio linen set every single summer. Worn over this bathing suit.
Piper’s bathing suits. The blueish floral one a bunch of you asked about is Olivier London, which is sadly no longer in business. The red checker seersucker swimsuit is Konges Sloejd from last year and sold out, but I found it here in navy. Her faux Celine sunnies are from the Ritz Carlton gift shop (thank you to the very sweet sales lady who let P try on every single pair before she decided which one she wanted).
P’s Custom Hand-Embroidered Jacket.
A couple weeks ago I came across Gusta Embroidery’s Instagram account (@gusta_embroidery). I’ve wanted to purchase this Hey Gang chore jacket for P for some time, but knew I also wanted to make it feel a little more special so I was thrilled to find this small, female founded business and her custom embroidery work. We exchanged a few messages on the design idea, and Juliette (the owner) was so thoughtful and just a joy to engage with through the quick project. She does all embroidery by hand and her work is meticulous and beautiful. Will be coming back to her for future projects and gifts for friends. Highly recommend checking her out.
Here’s the vintage inspiration I sent to Juliette, and a close up on the embroidery detail.
And yes, that last picture is taken at a McDonald’s somewhere in the desert. The kids had their first happy meal a month ago on a different road trip and got really excited when they spied a pair of golden arches from the highway this week. Nothing says quintessential-road-trip more than a McDonald’s stop on the way home from a really great family vacation together.
Have an amazing rest of the week!
xx
Justine
